First Response to "Semantic Web for the Working Ontologist"

Tagged:

I will have much more to write here as I work through amble through "Semantic Web for the Working Ontologist" (I know, I know...I'll add links later but I gotta get this out now!). I was tempted to skip the early, introductory chapters, but it was a delight to resist that urge.

A Firefox Sidebar for UMWBlogs

Project(s):

The project to produce a 'directory' (whatever that means when working with these kinds of sources) of UMWBlogs took an interesting turn a few weeks ago when I thought that getting at the connections between posts might be a more interesting starting point, and that the most natural way to expose those would be through a sidebar.

Many thanks to Fred Giasson, Niklas Lindström, and others for their kind advice in developing the university ontology.

Thoughts on Eric Miller's Talk

Tagged:  •    •

I'd been mulling over what to write in response to the talk Eric Miller gave to a small crowd here at UMW -- it was quite a treat. Fortunately, Gardner beat me to the punch with this post in response, so I'll go with responding to Gardner.

Alexandre Passant's MOAT (Meaning Of A Tag) project

Tagged:  •    •    •

Alexandre Passant continues to do wonderful things, this time with the MOAT (Meaning Of A Tag) project. He's extended Richard Newman's excellent Tagging ontology so that it expresses (possible) meanings of tags in a semantic web-friendly way (i.e., using a URI).

For a variety of small to medium-sized projects (at least as things are measured here), I've needed to model bits of pieces of the elements of my university, University of Mary Washington.

Tagged:  •    •    •    •

The "3 Tags Rule" in my previous post was mostly inspired by some things Jim Hendler's Reinventing Academic Publishing – Part III and in an article he co-wrote with Jennifer Golbeck, -->

"SPARQL me up an Old Fashioned", or, Where's the Semantic Bartender?

Tagged:  •    •    •

SPARQL me this:

PREFIX dbpedia2: <http://dbpedia.org/property/>
SELECT ?drink
WHERE { ?drink dbpedia2:bourbon "yes"@en}

(For the non-semantic webby, this is a basic semweb query for asking DBpedia for info in wikipedia about drinks with bourbon)

Semantic Web in Teaching and Learning -- finally on the doorstep?

Paul Miller at Nodalities posted this responding to thinking going on in the UK at the JISC CETIS 2007 Conference in a session called Semantic Structures for Teac

Mapping Connections and the Zitgist Browser

Tagged:  •    •    •

Frédérick Giasson revealed a pre-release of the zitgist semantic web browser. It's a great leap forward in making RDF data readable and browsable to people who would be perfectly happy in their lives never needing to see the acronym RDF.
